Job Description:
This is general duty police work involving responsibility for the protection of life and property. The prevention, detection and investigation of crime, and to maintain law and order. Assignments are carried out in accordance with established police rules and procedures. Police Officer must use their own judgement and, at times, act without supervision in meeting emergencies.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the supervision of a Police Sergeant or higher-ranking officer (at times may be responsible to a senior officer when no ranking person is on duty), who issues instructions regarding work assignments, and reviews work for effectiveness and conformance to instruction and department rules and procedures.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Employees in this class are required to perform their duties under all conditions of weather, and are required to place personal safety secondary to the performance of their duty, which may result in loss of life.


HOURS AND DAYS OF WORK:
As assigned and required.


ABILITY:
Ability to be trained in all aspects of entry-level police work, law enforcement, and all related skills to the position of police officers. Ability to observe situations analytically and objectively and to record the situations and information gathered in a complete and clear manner. Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public. Ability to learn modern methods of crime detection and prevention. Ability to understand and execute written and oral instructions. Ability to prepare clear and comprehensive reports. Ability to learn the effective uses and care of firearms and other self-protective devices, and sufficient physical strength and ability to defend oneself or to subdue violent persons.

INVESTIGATION OF FITNESS:
The candidate(s) will be investigated in order to secure evidence of their honesty, integrity, and general character. Evidence of the habitual use of alcohol or drugs, moral turpitude, disrespect for the law, unethical dealings or material misstatement of fact on the application will be considered sufficient grounds for rejection.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants must be twenty-one years of age, and a graduate from a standard high school or recognized equivalency. Applicant must possess a motor vehicle operator’s license issued by the State of Connecticut or a motor vehicle operator’s license issued by another State, and the candidate’s right to operate a motor vehicle in the State of Connecticut is not under suspension. Motor vehicle history of accidents and/or violations may be sufficient cause for rejection. Applicants must be a United States citizen, and reside in or near (within 30 minutes) the Town of East Windsor. Those persons who have a criminal record or have been dishonorably discharged from any police department, fire department, or from the Armed Forces of the United States are ineligible. Candidates will be probationary trainees until they have completed their one-year probationary period from the date of being sworn in as a Police Officer. Candidates must be in good physical health and condition.
